Reel Buzz: Resident Evil, The Town, Jack Goes Boating

There’s a little something for everyone in the next couple of weeks, despite the slow start of the month. Milla Jovovich killing zombies, a kid’s animated flick, Phillip Seymour Hoffman being anti-animated in “Jack Goes Boating,” and Don Draper chasing Ben Affleck around in “The Town” are all waiting at the box office.

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D

Milla Jovovich is back to kill some infected zombies as Resident Evil’s Alice. Ali Larter reprises her role as Claire Winfield. Apparently this is the first video game adaptation that is being done in 3D. Are you impressed? I’m not. Zombie brain splatter and a 3D-induced headache doesn’t bode well for the 17th sequel to the mediocre “Resident Evil.”

Alpha and Omega 3D

Warning: this movie is not a Veggie Tale. Instead it’s an animated movie about two wolves on the opposite side of the wolf social order. Kate (voiced by the Heroes’ cheerleader Hayden Panettiere) is an alpha dog. Humphrey, voiced by Justin Long, is an omega. Kate and Humphrey are taken to an animal refuge where they are supposed to regenerate the wolf population. Kate’s not having any of that, so they embark on an adventure to get back to their native Canada. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there, which may lead to puppy love after all. That’s nothing to howl at. Insert dog pun here.

Easy A

Emma Stone is uncomfortably hot. She might be 23, but in this flick she’s playing a high school girl who pretends to have sex with a handful of dudes to boost their social standing. Shockingly, her class is studying The Scarlet Letter just as she is being marked by the student body for her flooziness. So her response is to flounce her red locks to Lady Gaga in skimpy clothes. Amanda Bynes plays another hot high school girl, forgetting that she is growing out of high school roles. You know, like, totally seven years ago.

Jack Goes Boating

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is back on the tear-jerking wagon with his directorial debut based on a play by the same name. In the film, two working class NYC couples work out their seemingly drab life issues. Here’s one of those issues: Jack, played by Hoffman, doesn’t know how to swim, so in order to go on a boating date, he has to learn.

The Town

Ben Affleck is back behind the camera for his second flick. But instead of giving the younger Affleck the lead role, like in “Gone Baby Gone,” he’s taking it for himself. He also has a writing credit, so it’s an all-Affleck movie. Affleck plays a bank robber planning his next job, who falls for a bank manager from a previous heist. To add insult to injury, Jon Hamm is dead-set on putting him in jail. Look for Affleck threatening to kill people in a thick Bostonian accent followed by stoic looks off screen. Jeremy Renner and Blake Lively round out the cast.
